H+ – the logo “Transhumanists” swear by; by definition, is an international intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility and desirability of fundamentally transforming the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to eliminate aging and to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities. It is their goal and desire to transform and evolve the human condition to reach physical and mental utopia by utilizing available technologies, innovating them to propagate humanity to a higher state of development.
In a way, transhumanism is the missing link between humanism and perfection as philosophers define humanism as the influential, time-honoured doctrine that strives for rationality and fundamental human rights, freedoms and responsibilities. The ideology behind humanism is to treat everyone equally as we are all in this together. Humanism propagates everyone to be humane and just. Alike in more ways than one, transhumanism aims to embrace humanistic characteristics and unify it with technology for the betterment of the race. Put it this way, transhumanism is humanism upgraded to another level by means of technology and innovation.
A WAY OF LIFE
Unbeknown to many, we are in the transhumanism stage. Scientists all over the world strive to develop gadgets, utilize the environment for better drugs to combat diseases, develop and innovate better online services for the betterment of each and everyone. Although we have been doing this for millennia, it is only in this generation is the wave felt; the notion that everything is possible, that everything can be done with hard work and perseverance. Who would have thought that one day we would be able to fly, that we’d be able to communicate to one other from opposing ends of the world, that diseases deemed fatal are now treated with nonchalance.
A transhumanist’s view the world is simple but he looks at it through a kaleidoscope. That in every twist and turn results to new possible outcomes. This common yet unusual view of progress is the transhumanist’s way of life. They are able to look beyond obstacles and see solutions for the challenge rather than problems. They are the technologic avant-gardes of the society; optimists for progress and overcoming the limitations set before our human lives and use technology to alleviate suffering or life’s difficulties. Famous transhumanist ideologists have extensively written about this subject of extending life through biotechnology. That is why it is not uncommon for transhumanists to support anti-aging and longevity science, rejuvenation techniques and medications and other advanced biotechnology.
Everybody can practice transhumanism as a way of life since it does not hinder one to practice another faith; its only advocacy is to improve our mere human lives and transform it to something better and greater. By simply looking at problems as challenges and using the resources and technology available to us to eliminate sufferings, we are technically practicing transhumanism.
THE FUTURE WILL LOOK BRIGHTER
I personally believe that if everybody, in one way or another gives transhumanism a chance as a lifestyle, the world will become a better place. Bear in mind that transhumanism comes from the root word “humanism” the humane and ethical treatment of our neighbours and using technology to “trans” form our lives and enhance it to reach a personal utopia, our race’s future will be brighter.
