Tilikum the killer whale (Orcinus orca) made news recently in the tragic death of his Sea World trainer, Dawn Brancheau. Tilikum pulled Brancheau into the water when he grabbed her floating ponytail — much like a cat might grab yarn attached to a st…

I wrote an article about this topic about four years ago. It is still available by googling Jann Burner, FUTURE VISION Part One The Cyberware and The Hardware and Part Two. Still interesting.

I've thought about Robert's point about a ghost in the machine quite a lot. Most singularitarian arguments point to the emergence of AI as if we'll be able to detect it, but isn't it possible that under certain conditions a networked AI could develo…

I think it's just a logical extension of being able to view blueprints in a book. A friend rightly pointed out that people have been making things in their garages for decades. My own grandfather taught me a ton at the old garage workbench. The diff…

Winter is typically flu season, and talk around the water cooler in 2009 has turned to the H1N1 virus, the so-called “swine flu.” Many wonder if it might be comparable to the 1918 influenza virus that caused the catastrophic and historic pandemic of…

Response to e-mail Poll "how you view sex after the singulartity for Arse Electronica event"

This subject is extremely close to my heart since I´m a psychologist, and have many times thought about this in my own life.

To start, we must consider what sexuality is, what it is supposed to be (from different perspectives), and what it should be or how it would be most useful and fulfilling.

Besides those very lengthy subjects, which I will not discuss here so as to not seem pretentious, I think that as sexuality encompasses the closest intimacy that can now be achieved , both emotionally ( since sexual fantasies are at the core of the ego) and physically ( taking advantage of our animal instincts, be they socialized or not), the enhancement or even qualitative change of the nature of sexuality will be a revolutionary event for the human psyche, be it individually, in couples or in terms of the social dynamic of whole communities (which will now be possible for the first time in history as a true interdependent existence is made possible). Sexuality, and even more generally intimacy as a whole will be changed forever in the moment when technologies advance to the point in which thoughts and perceptions can be recorded and shared, this alone gives the word trust a whole new meaning, an informational meaning.

Apart from the implications that the singularity´s technologies might have on the traditional psychic structure, it will be amazing to observe the ways in which the self itself (ha ha, but no joke) will change, when bodies become irrelevant will gender be relevant, will atavisms of gendered personality remain in pockets of panicked throwbacks? or will sexuality transform along with the ego that it used to sustain?, Traditional sexuality might become as alien to us at it is to children culturally alienated from it, we might contemplate it with a loud "yuck!", but if the ego function survives and has to be psychologically supported (which could have to wait for another restructuring of the self to disappear) it could probably change its feed, from carnal, hormonal, and neurotransmitter mediated releases of tension and stress, to intellectual cycles of collective self awareness and information collation. A process like this could even take the place of sleep.

The decisive factor, I think, Is wether the emotions, instincts and functioning of the psyche (general and structural) will be changed by the combination or even substitution of man by machine, and if changed, then how much. Will there be infinite levels of freedom to reprogram our partially or completely digital being?, or will the psychical change be a distinct process from the physical?

I hope this opinion helps you, and good luck...

Wish I could be there...
